was driving at 40 mph when i suddenly lost power. managed to get it to the side of the road but it wouldnt start up again.

it cranks over normally too. pumped the primer and as soon as i cranked it over again it went soft so i presume by that the fuel system is ok. fuel filter has been on there a month :(

what could be wrong?

Well don't buy it off ebay then ;) they know what they're worth.

Scrappers is where the deals are! I've never bought one but i've enquired a few times and it's always been cheaper than ÂŁ200. By a decent amount.

Why would it go soft? its on the inlet side of the fuel filter so if the filter was blocked it would not cause the the primer bulb to collapse. I would first check you are getting fuel to the pump, then the wiring to the pump, both are much easier and cheaper to do than changing the pump.

You can check fuel is getting to the injectors as suggested above, but if it was I would expect it to fire.

it suggests to me that the pump cant create high enough pressure to open the injectors, so the fuel is just getting put back via the return lines which would relieve the pressure.

visually i cant see any problems with wiring

So pumping the primer gets it to run, but rough too?

Next thing i'd try is trying to run it with the fuel in and fuel return hoses running straight from a can of diesel (be very careful that the can and diesel are clean as there is no filtering except the banjo bolt if you do this).

That will completely rule out fuel blockages.

Ah, i misread that as either.

Does sound like timing. Its odd that it went suddenly, they tend to go slowly, with tractoring and difficulty starting happening first.

That or the pump not generating enough pressure for the injectors to fire.

I have just had this experience myself, my wife was in tesco car park and it just stopped. Despite all the optimism I had that it may not be the pump, the pump ecu was dead. You get fuel at the injectors if you slacken the pipes but this is false hope, there is plenty of flow but no pressure. I opted for a repaired pump and ÂŁ200 was not enough!

I won't be going down the pub for a week or two.

I got two fault codes: words to the effect of "communication error with pump ecu" and "fuel quantity solenoid malfunction"
