Hi,

I'm looking at a 2001 25 1.8 GTI tomorrow and was wondering if there was anything in particular that I should look out for?

Its done 45000 miles and has service history right up to this year and has 11 months MOT. Apparently the aircon works fine and its in very good condition according to the current owner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi steve.

hope the car is ok when you see it tommorrow

Check out if the cambelt has been done (especially if its a VVC), even though it has not hit the mileage for a cambelt change it has due to the age of the vehicle.

Check for any signs of HGF as this is a K series engine, and if it has been done try and find out what sort of HG was used when it was done, if a cheap one was used it could go again. Best HG is the new gripper gasket.

Theres probably some other stuff to look out for but I cant think at the mo.

Good luck ! :broon:

Check the electrics and the rear wiper wash, as both can go due to the path the take to the tailgate. Also, ask to see the most recent MOT certificate and see if there were any cautions. If there are, then ask if anything's been done to solve them.

Just check over it like you would any other car really.

Check the front wiper on intermittent to see it works properly.

If there is a sunroof, check for rust around the edge and that the seal is ok....it may leak.

Check the boot for signs of leaking.

Make sure there's a spare or tyre weld kit....also a key for the alloy wheels.

Make sure all the doors lock, and central locking is ok....also ask if there is 2 fobs, and make sure they both work.

If it's the original stereo, ask if it has the code.

Check the electric windows all go up and down.

Check the mirrors to make sure they move if they are electrically operated.

On a test drive, listen for knocking sounds.....try to test the brakes. Make sure the sterring doesn't pull to one side.

Check the tyres for uneven wear and tear.

Check the clock is fine...ie, all digits displayed

Lastly, as was suggested to me when I was asking for advice on testing a Rover 25....crash into a pole and test the air bag ;) (just kidding)
