Hi, I have a 1996 P reg 218 VVC Coupe. I have had the head gasket done on it and ever since it will not rev past 5500rpm. It does not drive like a vvc should. Sometimes when starting it will idle very lumpy and if I rev it up to about 6500 rpm this will clear the idle problem but then it will got back to the problem of not using the full rev range. Any ideas??

Your first post is slightly confusing as you say it will not rev past 5500rpm but then you say if you rev it past 6500rpm it will clear your idle problem !!!
Who did the head gasket ? and was the vvc timing altered ? was the head skimmed ?

99.9% the time it will start and idle fine. But occationally when starting it will be very lumpy when idling. But for some reason this allows the engine to rev all the way through the rev range. If the engine starts lumpy I will let it warm up and take it all the way to the factory set limiter. This will correct the idle problem but it will then go back to the problem of not going past 5500 rpm. Hard to explain really but hope this make more sense. A local garage did the head gasket work. And the head was skimmed. I have had the timing checked by one ex rover tech and another guy and it looks fine. Many thanks. McCawley.
