2 quick questions for MOT next week!

Hiya guys,
Have tried to find the answer to these two questions - but I've had mixed responses, and was hoping someone might know the correct answer!

My MOT expires on the 7th October ... if I was to put it through an MOT on the 30th September and it fails, does this then mean that the first MOT would now be invalid? Or could I still drive it around to get the repairs sorted out etc and be covered still until the 7th?

And also, I've got an IMG leak, is this likely to affect anything for the MOT (such as emissions) ?

Any help would be great,

Thanks

I wouldnt of thought your inlet manifold gasket would cause much problems unless it was an obvious blow, and yes you are covered up until your old MOT expires, you can get an MOT done about 20-30days before the old one ends it tells you on the back of the MOT sheet

mark
an mot is a roadworthyness test therefor a new test would invalidate the old one.

an mot is NOT a roadworthyness test, it is purely ensuring the vehicle is in an adequate condition at the time of testing
If it fails you can still drive it and your old one is NOT invalidated. IMG will have no affect as it doesnt make the car dangerous in any way.

is that true? back of the certificate and my training say otherwise :S
When my coupe failed its MOT with a week left the station said it was still legal to drive it.

But i guess it depends on how bad it is, like if the cars gonna break in half they wont let you take it.

oh yeah obviously, maybe my memory is on the fritz!
An mot is valid for one year. It only states that at the time of testing it was deemed roadworthy. Just because a car has a current mot does not mean that it is still roadworthy. An internal inlet manifold leak ''could'' affect your emissions.
You can have a max of a 13 month mot if you get your car in for a mot 1 month before it expires, if the car fails the MOT then your old mot does not become invalid, by vosa allowing you to enter your car into a MOT up to a month before the old one expires and then allows a 13 month mot prooves it does not invalidate the old mot.
IMG leak might cause problem with the emmission test as previously stated, could also cause the engine to overheat during the test as some mot garages carry out the emmissions check indoors with extract for the fumes
I put my Ford Fiesta in for an MOT about 2-3 weeks before it expired in June. Needless to say it failed however I drove it around for the next 2 weeks without any issues at all. So I think its ok
If you fail an MOT it makes the current one VOID.

Just because you did it it doesn't mean it's legal.
Correct. Read the VOSA MOT guide you can pick up at most garages. You will see I'm correct.
Can you find me where it says this, ive just looked at that leaflet and see no such part

Jmurray is right you all. i just had this conversatition with my mot tester, he said that once you've been issued the refusal of an mot test certificate your current one becomes invalid.
wow what a confusing thread

the inlet manifold gasket leak will effect emissions and this MAY cause it to fail

as for the other issue, i'll text my dad and ask he used to be a station manager for VOSA and should know
OK

The blowing gasket is a possible fail, it depends if the tester considers it a 'serious leak'

From direct.gov.uk site:

The exhaust system
Is secure, complete, without serious leaks and silences effectively.

and you can MOT the car upto 1 month before the test date and this has NO effect on the date of current expiary, should the car pass a month before the date of expiary of the current certificate then the 12 months of test issued by the recent MOT begins the day the current test runs out. If the car fails it still has a 'current valid MOT certificate' until the day the current test runs out and is perfectly legal to drive.

From Direct.gov.uk website:

When you can MOT your vehicle
You can renew your MOT up to one month before it expires without affecting your annual expiry date. You can find out when the earliest date to MOT your vehicle is by checking the front of the pass certificate.
