hi,

1) I just want to know if this is normal, i have a 1.4i rover 400 1998, from cold in the morning the car seems to idle at around 1500rpms, once its warmed up it runs at just under 1000rpms, Does this sound about right for the age and the engine size,

2) Is it possible to upgrade the headgasket dowels with the steel ones, if so how much would a job like this cost me, im not able to do it as im a dummy when it comes to engines

It sounds OK for the engine to IDLE that high. It wont make much difference changing the dowels. The gasket will only go if something causes it to blow eg: water pump failure, faulty thermostat, temperature sensor etc.
