Just curious - where do these engines originate from? Development of a Rover? Very interesting arrangement of timing belts.

Just had a quick look at Google images for the Prima and it shows the drive for the pump on the same end as the cam drive - I assume that the joint venture between Rover & Perkins resulted in some re-engineering?

The L series came as a development from the Perkins MDi engine.
The MDi was a Perkins development of the Rover O series engine (Petrol), and was basically a diesel version of the Rover O series.

The 2.0 Perkins Prima was used in The Maestro & Montego in both turbo and naturally aspirated guises -Rover didn't have their own diesel engine. The engine was a bit agricultural but tough as old boots, we had one in a Maestro and all that was replaced was a water pump and one injector washer in 135k!

I believe Powertrain further developed the engine into the L series and amongst many other things changed the belt arrangements.
