Whats the difference between these two engines. Am I right in thinking the 2.0 variant is the L series and if so is the 2.2 just an uprated version or a completely different engine or was the L series only fitted to the XDi range from 1998-2000 ?

As already said: the TD4 engine was the BMW unit (same as R75?) badged TD4 because of the TD5 units fitted to the Disco and Defender.

The 2.2 litre engine will be the Ford / PGA TDCi unit that is also fitted to the X-Type....

Either way no relation what-so-ever to the L-Series !

Not quite.

The Freelander TD4 engine is not related to the X-Type's engine in any way. The Freelander uses the Ford/PSA DW12 2.2 engine, also used in the new Mondeo, Pug 407, Citroen C5 etc.

The X-Type uses the Ford 'Puma' engine, also used in the old Mondeo and Transit.
