1.8 Turbo engine conversion

How easy would it be to drop a 1.8 turbo engine into a ZR or ZS? Surly this engine is an easier/cheaper conversion than the T series turbo and with a little fettle would produce 180+ bhp reasonably easily?

Take my ZS120, a 1.8 Turbo engine would bolt straight to my gearbox, engine mounts, wouldnt need beefier shocks (unlike T series conversion) in my head all would need to be done is a mod to the front section of my exhaust to meet the different manifold and some wiring changes on the ECU

Im just thinking this will be the next engine for conversions as T series Turbos run out. K series is much lighter, better on fuel and loads of cheap 75/ZT to pinch them out of

You'd need to change the exhaust for a bigger one usually 2.25 or up I think.

I wouldn't assume the 1.8t is better on fuel than the t16 either. Best I've had from my 220t is 37mpg. Best I've had on my ZTT 1.8t is 32. The T series is also FAR more reliable.

Thats the plan for our track car tbh. as soon as the 160 dies or we really get the need for more power.
Its a pretty simple swap with the engine being a direct replacement. Only thing you have to worry about is the exhaust which you mentioned and intercooler setup.
You need to keep your Engine mounts, gearbox, clutch and flywheel because the ones from the ZT are different

The 120 ECU can be remapped by KMaps (Formerly Z&F Tuning) and runs ~190bhp depending on supporting mods etc. 200-210bhp is more or less the limit of the standard engine though.

1) an easy conversion - Easier than the T series these days as there are plenty of people who have done it and ECU conversions
2) a cheap conversion - Relatively these days
3) it's more unreliable than the T - No, but that doesn't mean its unreliable
4) it's as thirsty as the T - No
5) you need a bigger exhaust for it to work properly - Not to start with for a reasonable amount of performance

This is so incredibly tempting to do! My ZS is a 120 but the engine went bang so the previous owner put the 135 from a TF in. With a K&N filter, stainless backbox etc im guessing its nearly 140bhp now? which is ok but its still slow tbh The extra torque from the turbo would be worth it alone!

Just remember if you are thinking of doing a rebuild, a turbo 1.8 block is recommend as the rods have a different length for the compression ratio required for the turbo.

If you know more about fitting turbos then by all means ignore what i've said but just making you aware in case you were thinking of running a 220bhp monster on a stock 120 block.

The cranks are very tough on k-series with a lot of the aftermarket cranks being more out of alignment than the rover ones. (apparently some guy took them to the rover calibration factory and tested them once).

If you're just thinking of chucking ALL stock 1.8t parts into a normal engine you can probably get away with it though as you probably won't run much more than 175bhp on those anyway.

Ask around though. Different people have different knowledge bases for this kind of thing.
