How Do I?.... Fit Xenon HID Units to an R8 Rover (200, 400, Coupe, Cabriolet)

11th February 2006
Fed up of not really being able to see where you're going at night? Well, despite buying Halford's best 'Superbrilliance' bulbs, I was dissapointed with the lights on the Coupe. Perhaps I've been spoilt with new cars over the past few years, but the lights on the old R8 Rovers do seem to be showing thier age. So I invested in a set of HID Xenon lights.

No, these aren't those chavtastic fake xenon bulbs that you can get, these are proper Xenon light setups, complete with the ballasts required to generate the 23,000 volt charge to ignite them!

The guide shows the lights being fitted to a Rover Coupe, but the same could well apply to any Rover 200 up to 1995, Rover 400 up to 1995 and any Coupe, Cabriolet and Tourer. The same princliples however also apply to any car, as the kit is the same but the bulb type does vary.

If you are interested in buying a set, we are looking into arranging a group buy. Please drop me a line at xenons@mg-rover.org to express an interest.

Ok, what you buy.

The kit contains a few items.
2 x HID Bulbs.
2 x Ballasts
Some cable ties
2 x Ballast mounting plates (I didn't use these.

It comes with a 3 year guarentee on both the ballasts and the bulbs! beware of cheaper kits that only cover the bulbs for 6 months and the ballasts for 12.

You don't need to do any drilling or major electrical work to fit these, its almost plug and play! The plug on the loom which would normally fit onto the bulb simply plug into the ballast, you then connect the bulb to the ballast and away you go!

However, the first thing you need to do is a small re-wiring.

As standard, the plugs supplied are like this...

However, with the Rover setup, you need to move the red pin form the right hand slot to the top slot. Its a piece of cake to do.

Firstly, find a small flat bladed screwdriver and slide it into the hole next to the pin. What you need to do is flatten the little tag so you can then remove the pin.

If you angle the screwdriver as above, you'll flatten the tag and you can then *push* the pin out - do not pull on the wire!

Now its out, slide the screwdriver under the tag to make it stick up a bit so it will keep the pin in place when you insert it.

Now insert it into the top slot

and the minor re-wire is complete!
