Plato once again on the podium
Plato once again on the podium
Rain, rain and more rain greeted MG KX Momentum Racing for today’s three rounds of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Thruxton in Hampshire. The team worked late into the night in order to repair both of their MG6 race cars and were rewarded with two podium finishes for lead driver, double BTCC champion; Jason Plato.

Race One of the day started in treacherous conditions, Jason Plato made a fantastic start and breezed past pole-sitter Jordan on the run down to Turn One, the Honda then aquaplaned into Jason’s MG6 sending him off onto the grass, dropping him to 5th, with Jordan spinning out of the race. The conditions meant there were several incidents and the Safety-Car was deployed after 12 laps, with Jason having climbed to a podium position in 3rd. The race was declared a result under the Safety Car, due to the adverse conditions and several damaged cars needing to be recovered. 75% race distance had been reached and so full points were awarded.

The rain had relented slightly as the BTCC field formed up for Race Two, but Dunlop’s wet tyre was most certainly still required to splash around the soggy Hampshire venue. Jason ran third in the early stages, battling with the eventual winner Shedden. Continuing to fight the conditions Jason went on to record his second podium of day, coming home in a strong second place.

MG6 @ Thruxton
MG6 @ Thruxton
The UK is on course for the wettest April since records began and that was certainly evident at Thruxton as MG KX Momentum Racing took to the track for today’s Practice and Qualifying sessions, before tomorrow’s three rounds of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Thruxton in Hampshire.

The Triple Eight team got its first wet running with their two new MG6s during the morning’s First Practice session. Jason Plato ventured out onto Thruxton’s sodden high-speed turns to begin the important task of gathering wet data and understanding how the MG6 would handle the slippery conditions. The answer was rather well, as he posted the 3rd fastest time during his 16 laps.

Unfortunately Andy Neate’s poor run of luck continued as he was confined to the garage for the session with an electrical fault.
The circuit stayed treacherous for Second Practice and so Dunlop’s wet tyres were still essential. Jason continued his programme, building his knowledge of the car in the wet and posted the 2nd fastest time of the session. Andy meanwhile got some wet running under his belt for the first time, completing 16 laps to begin his weekend’s work in earnest.

MG6 BTCC
MG6 BTCC
The MG KX Momentum Racing team head to Thruxton this weekend for rounds seven, eight and nine of the 2012 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). It has been a busy start to the season for the championship leaders, with the first three race weekends all falling in April. The team is looking for a strong weekend, with the BTCC taking a six week break before the next instalment of the season at Oulton Park.

The Thruxton circuit in Hampshire is the fastest circuit on the 2012 BTCC calendar, with the average speed of the qualifying lap record being in excess of 111mph. The high speed nature of Thruxton means that championship tyre supplier Dunlop have to produce a special edition tyre, that is capable of enduring the high loads the tyres are put under during the weekend’s competition.

MG Icon
MG Icon
It’s the first SUV concept car from the company and was created by the MG global design team headed by British director Anthony Williams-Kenny.

The MG Icon takes inspiration from some of the legendary brand’s most famous sports cars including the MGA and MGB GT. Williams-Kenny said: “The MG brand has a unique set of values and heritage and allows us to offer individual design values to our products. The MG Icon represents our vision of a modern MG and we feel that the small SUV canvas demonstrates MG’s capacity for progressive design with respect for its long heritage.

“We have balanced familiar brand cues, such as the wide and powerful front end graphic interpretation and, as one would expect, with a strong focus on the unique MG octagon.

BTCC MG6
BTCC MG6
This weekend the BTCC circus heads off to Donington Park for races 4,5 and 6 of the season. It was a fairy-tale start to the championship last time out at Brands Hatch and the Triple Eight run squad are looking to keep the momentum going at the Leicestershire venue.

As the premier four-wheeled British Motorsport series, the BTCC is acknowledged to be tough and unforgiving and so to arrive at the first round of the championship with a brand new, un-tested car was a challenge, even for a team with the race winning pedigree of Triple Eight Race Engineering. The team’s quality shone through though, as the new MG6 performed admirably and defied the odds to take victory in the hands of Jason Plato on its first appearance at a race weekend.

Despite this unprecedented debut success, the Banbury based team are not resting on their laurels. With the proof that their new car has race winning performance, the team have re-doubled their efforts to ensure that the MG6 is fully prepared to undertake its next challenge; the undulating Donington Park circuit, where this weekend MG KX Momentum Racing will again look to fight it out right at the front of the field.

MG is entering the lease hire business with a new contract hire scheme called MG Lease.

From today MG Lease will be offered throughout MG Motor UK’s dealer network and news of the scheme has already generated interest from companies and individual drivers.

Initially MG6 GT fastback S and SE models will be available under the scheme. Within a few months MG6 GT TSE models and MG6 Magnettes will be added, along with used MG6 VAT qualifying cars up to a year old and with a maximum of 15,000 recorded miles.

Richard Bourton, MG Motor UK’s Regional Operations Manager in charge of MG Lease, said: “There is a huge potential for the MG6 to be marketed to the ‘user chooser’ company drivers who want to be seen to be driving something different from their colleagues.

MG Are Back....
MG Are Back....
MG KX Momentum Racing celebrated a fantastic first race weekend at Brands Hatch in Kent, as the 2012 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) sprang into action. The team's hard work to get the two brand new MG6's ready for the season was rewarded in spectacular style with an unbelievable debut win.

Race One of the day saw Jason start strongly and move through the field and incredibly on just lap 15 of the MG6's first ever race, it was challenging for the lead. Unfortunately some contact at Paddock Hill Bend saw the Vauxhall Jason was battling retire and him drop down the order to finish fourth. Andy Neate set about making his way through the field following a difficult qualifying session yesterday and improved to bring the second Triple Eight run car home in a strong 12th.

MG5
MG5
The MG5 was recently unveiled in China for their market. It is UK bound and is rumoured to be here in 2013 / 2014. It is the MG version of the Roewe 350, which if you watch Top Gear, is the car that James May drove when they were over in China.

Obviously what you see in the pictures is Chinese specification and will undoutably change before it appears in UK showrooms. Current engine options in China are the 1.5 VVT, which in chinese spec produces 105BHP. The engine is going to get some reworking before it comes over here, so hopefully the power will be increased to be inline with european standards. The is also a turbo version in the pipeline, rumoured to be around 150bhp.

There will of course be a Turbo Diesel as well, which is about to debut in the MG6. Its quite likely there may even be a larger engined version than the 1.5, the New Large engine starts at 2 litre and that would no doubt go down well with the enthusiasts.
